Celebrate our nation’s independence at a reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Gering Civic Plaza. We think of July 4, 1776 as Independence Day, it’s the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. It wasn’t until noon on July 8 that the Declaration was first read aloud in public. Couriers showed up at Easton, Pennsylvania and Trenton, New Jersey with copies of the Declaration to be read in each town at noon on July 8. The Declaration was also read at Independence Hall in Pennsylvania at the same time. 

Bring a lawn chair and join the Katahdin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Gering’s Civic Plaza on July 8. We have asked Scouting America Troop 3 to start the reading, but any other interested community members are welcome to take turns reading parts of the Declaration of Independence aloud, proclaiming our nation’s founding ideas aloud 250 years after they were first shared in public.
