Celebrate Tourism Week In Gering!

The highlight of the week is a full day of events on Tuesday, May 6, dedicated to the historic Japanese Hall at Legacy of the Plains Museum, culminating in the Nebraska State Historical Society Marker dedication at 4:00 p.m.

Starting at 9:00 a.m., Japanese Hall will open its doors to the public free of charge. Throughout the day, visitors can experience presentations and tours that reflect on the deep and enduring legacy of Japanese immigrants in Nebraska:

  • 10:30 a.m. – Julie Ushio presents “Graves of Early Immigrants” at the Legacy of the Plains Museum Great Hall, followed by a guided walking tour of Fairview Cemetery.
  • 1:30 p.m. – Vickie Sakurada Schaepler offers insights on “The Legacy of Japanese
    Immigrants in Nebraska.”
  • 2:45 p.m. – Sharon Ishii-Jordan and Kim Hachiya discuss Japanese and Japanese
    American Incarceration Camps of WWII.
  • 6:00 p.m. – A Nebraska Public Media premiere screening of “Rescuing Japanese Hall” will be shown at the Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff. Admission is free.
