As you drive down “M” Street, you will be driving along the path of the historic Oregon Trail. This takes you through historic downtown Gering, to the Legacy of the Plains Museum and to Scotts Bluff National Monument. During your visit you won’t be able to miss our breathtaking landscapes and world-famous sunrises and sunsets. For all of you lovers of the great outdoors, just a few miles out of town you will find hiking, biking trails, and wildlife, abundant for your enjoyment.

Legacy of the Plains Museum

Located on the Oregon Trail, the Legacy of the Plains Museum features pioneer and early community history, antique farm equipment, an 80-acre working farm and other structures.The exhibit hall features 37 hands-on activities. Legacy of the Plains Museum is a destination for people interested in the stories of human and agricultural history in the North Platte Valley and High Plains. Our exhibits focus on the archeology of Native American and Westward Expansions, the lives of pioneering settlers, the establishment of irrigation, the development of rural communities, the diversity of culture on the High Plains, and the innovative technologies and cultural practices of raising animals and crops in the semi-arid environment.

Western Nebraska Pioneers Baseball​

Take me out to the ball game! The Pioneers began play in May 2018 and play home games at Oregon Trail Park Stadium in Gering, Nebraska. The Pioneers offer affordable family fun all summer long. The “Pios” won their 250th game as a team on July 18, 2024, and look towards the future with an eye on even more success! We look forward to seeing you and your family for hotdogs, cold drinks, and the best baseball in the region. Go Pios!

Scotts Bluff National Monument​

Towering 800 feet above the North Platte River, Scotts Bluff has served as a landmark for peoples from Native Americans to emigrants on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails to modern travelers. Views from the Summit take in the entire valley with clear sight of Chimney Rock to the East and Laramie Peak to the West. Views, wildlife, and amazing photo opportunities for the novice and experienced hikers alike. Rich with geological and paleontological history as well as human history, there is much to discover while exploring the 3,000 acres of Scotts Bluff National Monument.

Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area​

Whether you become captivated from the exploration of 1,094 acres of wilderness or by indoor interactive displays, you’re sure to gain a deeper appreciation for the outdoors with a visit to the Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area and Nature Center. The park, which is situated high on a rocky escarpment in the Wildcat Hills, offers an escape to the region’s signature rugged topography and evergreen-studded canyons. Not to mention, the area features an extraordinary view of the North Platte River Valley from its system of trails and observation decks at the nature center.
